Trieste
We arrived in Trieste on Thursday 24th June and left on Saturday 26th, so had a full day to explore. We visited the main Roman sites as well as the San Giusto Cathedral and castle. We also looked around the town.
The Roman Theatre had quite good seating but virtually nothing at the stage area.
The Arch of Ricardo was thought to have been built about 1BC under Octavian, but later research and excavations in the area point to it being part of a larger temple area. The rest of the arch and other bits of wall are to be found in the restaurant next door.
There is quite a good selection of mosaics, statuary and funerary monuments in the museum located in the San Giusto castle. As was usual, most of the funeral mausoleums and monuments were situated alongside one of the main roads leading out of Trieste.
Views from the battlements of San Giusto Castle.
Views of Piazza della Unita Italia. This is the site of the harbour in the middle ages.
We had a ride on a tram from Trieste up the hill to Opicina. The second view is taken from the Obelisk near to Opicina.
