Day 2 - Saturday 29th March 2014
We were up and out early for a day on the Dartmouth Steam Railway. We parked in a very handy multi-storey carpark in the centre of Paignton and caught the 10.30 am train towards Kingswear.
We asked the conductor/guard to stop at Greenway Halt and found we had to move into one of the two front carriages as the platform at Greenway Halt is very short. The walk from the station to Agatha Christie's former holiday home, Greenway, is about a mile and can be done along the narrow country lane or through the woods. Greenway is a National Trust property and was bought by Agatha Christie and her second husband, Max Mallowan, in 1938. They had many enjoyable family holidays with her daughter and the house was eventually passed on to her. It was taken on by NT in 2000 and opened after some restoration. After a walk around the grounds and a visit to the boathouse we walked back to the station and boarded a train to complete the trip to Kingswear.
The photos show some of the interiors of the house, especially the frescoes on the ground floor done by a US Navy officer - the house was used by US Navy/Coastguards during WW2.
After arriving in Kingswear we boarded a foot passenger ferry across the River Dart to Dartmouth. The river is incredibly busy with yachts and cruisers moored in a large marina style mooring on one side of the river. There was a rowing competiton on when we arrived. We caught the last steam train of the day at 5.00pm to return to Paignton, paying extra to ride in a Pullman Observation coach.
