Chambord
The chateau at Chambord was created by Francoise 1 as a palace with many features usually found in castles. It is thought that the central double helix staircase was designed or suggested by Leonardo da Vinci who lived nearby for the last few years of his life. The site was a boggy area before building commenced and the chateau is built on a platform supported by oak piles.
