Rivau
We visited Rivau on Sunday 25th May. It was a bright sunny morning with lots of flowers and birds in the chateau gardens and even a cuckoo in the distance. The chateau was built in the 13th and 15th centuries by the Beauvau family who were related to the Kings of France. The present fortifications that can be seen were constructed in the 15th century. The beams in the ceiling are the biggest in the Loire valley. They measure 60 x 80 cm and the oak trees from which they were cut were already 300 years old when they were felled in the 15th century. Restoration in recent years has involved replacing may broken slates on the roofs to render the buildings water tight. Many of the giant beams were rotting in the walls where water had seeped in, so repairs using seasoned oak and traditional techniques have made them sound again. Restoration of the stables block continues. The gardens are delightful for all ages.
