Avignon
Avignon was established by the early Gauls as a tribal capital but during the Roman period it was overshadowed by Orange and Arles. It became a world leading city when the Popes settled there from 1309 until about 1420. The Palais des Papes was built, added to and modified at various times.

The bridge was built 1177-1185 and was originally stone piers built on Roman footings and piles, with wooden decking. Later the bridge was rebuilt as seen today. Piers and arches have been swept away by the force of the River Rhone in flood at various times. The bridge was finally abandoned during the 17th century. There have been several songs and tunes. The current song and tune came about in about 1850 for a French comic opera. Originally the words went 'danse sous la pont d'Avignon as there was a cafe under one of the arches and people sang and danced there at times. Over the years it has got changed to 'danse sur la pont d'Avignon.
