Scotney Castle was bought by Edward Hussey in 1778 and his grandson, also Edward Hussey, transformed the estate. The original moated castle in the valley was replaced in the 1830s by a new house above the valley. The original castle was deliberately ruined to produce a romantic folly.

Sissinghurst Castle Gardens was the home of Lady Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicholson. They bought the estate in 1932 after they had been married some years and set about creating a garden to suit their taste. Harold was a member of the Diplomatic Corps and was frequently away during the years before WW2. Vita was a daughter of the 3rd Lord Sackville of Knole House and was a noted writer.
