The holiday was booked through a local travel agent with Olympic Holidays. We hired a car for 5 days to explore the island and its historic past.
Hotel Aquila Porto Rethymnon
The hotel was a comfortable modern hotel set on the beach road about 500 metres from the Old Town. There were other hotels in the vicinity as well as shops of all sorts, cafes, restaurants, and car rental offices. The beach on the other side of the road was reserved for the various hotels in designated areas. There were also some sports areas, including a volley ball pitch. The traffic along the beach road was a bit of a nuisance and there was no let up (Italian beach resorts often close the road during the evening for people to walk unhindered).

During the holiday we could not help noticing the small roadside shrines along the roads. They were every few kilometres, the interval varied very much. You can see a few on our Shrines page.
