Hotel Alpha, Sant'Agnello
Hotel Alpha is a family run hotel in Sant'Agnello, a town on the edge of Sorrento, about 2 km from Sorrento centre. It is a fairly small hotel and the service is very good. We were half board and the meals were always interesting with some choice. The hotel was about 200 yards from the station of the Circumvesuviana Railway which gave us easy access to Sorrento and the stations towards Naples, such as Pompeii Scavi and Ercolano Scavi where we could visit the Roman sites. There were also local and regional buses but the time tables were a bit erratic and there were some public sector strikes whilst we were there and we came to view the buses with some distrust. We did use them but had one day ruined when we were intending to go to Amalfi on a SITA bus which never arrived.

Sorrento is a very busy market town with a seaside below its cliffs. The old town is a maze of narrow streets on a grid pattern with shops, restaurants, bars, cafes, and workshops in profusion. There two marinas, one at each end of the town. Marina Grande is the original harbour and there is a boat builder's yard just behind the harbour front. The fishing boats operate from there and some pleasure boats. Marina Piccola is newer but no smaller than the other. The ferry boats to Capri, Naples and other destinations operate from the marina. There is a large contingent of pleasure boats. There are also several pleasure and swimming lidos along the cliff at one end of the marina.
